Tooth Extraction
Downey, CA

Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from the dental alveolus or the socket. At Amir Sanjabi, DDS, we are highly experienced in performing dental extractions and making the procedure as painless as possible.

Reasons for Dental Extraction

At Amir Sanjabi, DDS, our priority is to save your tooth. However, there are several reasons why we need to resort to dental extraction.

Crowded Mouth

Extraction of one or multiple teeth may be necessary in case of overcrowding in the mouth. This is also necessary if you need to undergo an orthodontic treatment and have to make space in your mouth so that your teeth can be straightened out.

Your tooth may get infected if the tooth decay extends into the dental pulp. Usually, we recommend root canal treatment for such cases. However, sometimes, the infection is so deep-rooted and severe that the treatment and antibiotics cannot fix it.

Periodontal Disease

Patients suffering from advanced stages of periodontitis may experience loosening of tooth/teeth. We may try to fix this through periodontal treatments and maintenance. However, in severe cases, we may need to remove the tooth.

Impacted Teeth

An impacted tooth is one that is prevented from emerging out of the gum because of other teeth. This leads to an incomplete eruption. This often happens in the case of wisdom teeth or canine teeth.

Retained Baby Tooth

Sometimes baby teeth do not fall out in time. One of the causes can be severe crowding in the mouth. In this case, it can prevent the permanent tooth from growing in the correct position.

Some other reasons for tooth extraction are people developing infected teeth during cancer treatment or after an organ transplant. These teeth may need to be extracted.

Types Of Dental Extractions

There are two types of dental extraction:

Simple extraction

A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible in the mouth. At Amir Sanjabi, DDS, Amir Sanjabi, DDS will gently loosen the tooth with special tools and pull it out. Most simple extractions can be done with just a local anesthetic.

Surgical extraction

A surgical extraction involves removing a tooth that has not yet come erupted from the gum or may have broken off at the gum line. Amir Sanjabi, DDS will make a small incision into your gum and, if necessary, remove hard-to-remove teeth like molars in pieces. In surgical extraction, we may inject you with an intravenous anesthetic as well.

What to Expect Post-Extraction

We will give you detailed instructions on what to do and what to expect after your tooth has been pulled out.
•  You will experience some pain after your anesthetic wears off. Most tooth pain disappears after a day or two. However, surgical pain can be a bit more long-lasting. We will prescribe you some over-the-counter pain medications which you will need to take 3 to 4 times a day.
•  You will experience small amounts of bleeding from the wound for the next 24 hours. Clots may also form in the extraction site and you should not disturb those. A gentle salt rinse after 24 hours can prevent infection.
•  Use ice compresses for your face if your jaw is stiff and sore.
•  Don’t use a straw for the first 24 hours and do not smoke, as it can hamper healing.
•  Eat soft food and cool foods, like yogurt, ice cream, and pudding, for a few days while the wound heals. You can slowly reintroduce normal food into your diet.
•  Brush and floss your teeth but avoid the extraction site.

If your experience increased swelling or bleeding or suffer from fever or infection, make an appointment by calling us at (562) 869-0928 as soon as possible.

Tooth Replacement Options

After your tooth is extracted, it will be important to consider your options for tooth replacement. If nothing is done, the bone in your jaw will begin to recede very quickly, which could make replacement more difficult in the future. To avoid this, you may want to consider a dental implant, which will prevent bone loss after extraction.
