“We give you a complete smile!”

Missing teeth don’t just impact your smile; they also put a strain on your other teeth. At Amir Sanjabi, DDS, we strive to give you complete smiles with the help of dentures.

A denture is a removable prosthetic device that is used to replace missing teeth. There are two major types of dentures: complete and partial.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures are made for when a person has lost all his or her teeth. These dentures can replace the teeth in the upper jaw or the lower jaw or both. The upper dentures are held in place by the vacuum created between the device and the palate. Lower dentures are curved to accommodate the tongue and are held in place by jaw implants. When dentures are secured in place by dental implants, they are referred to as implant-supported dentures, or the All-on-4 treatment concept.

Complete dentures are placed when the gum tissues have healed. While you wait for that, we may fit you with immediate dentures that can be fitted the same day as your teeth extraction. This means you do not have to go without teeth for any amount of time. However, same-day dentures are not for permanent use.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures consist of a plate with one or more replacement teeth on it. These are used when one or more of your real teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. Partial dentures have a metal framework which is designed to attach to your natural teeth with precision attachments. They give your denture a more natural look.

Partial dentures do not just close the gap made by lost teeth, but also stop your remaining teeth from shifting.

What to Expect After Getting Dentures

New dentures may feel strange and uncomfortable in your mouth, at least in the first few weeks. However, you will adjust to them in time. Here is what to expect:
•  Your denture will feel bulky and awkward in your mouth. This is completely normal, and you will adjust to them in some time.
•  You will have to practice and learn to insert and remove your denture.
•  Do not try to force the dentures into place by biting on them. This can warp their shape or break them.
•  We may ask you to wear the dentures all the time. This will help us identify any areas that may need adjustment
•  If your dentures are pushing against a certain area and making it sore, we will adjust them to fit you more comfortably.
•  Eat soft foods cut into small pieces when trying out new dentures. Also, chew with both sides of the mouth to keep the pressure even.
•  Your denture may make speaking awkward and pronunciation of some words difficult at first. Practice speaking loudly and repeat words that give you trouble and in time, you will adjust to the dentures.

How to Take Care of Your Dentures

Here are some tips that you can use to help take care of your dentures:
•  Place your dentures in plain water or a cleansing solution when you are not wearing them. Do not use hot water as it can cause the plastic to distort.
•  Brush your dentures every day to remove food deposits, stains, and tartar.
•  Even if you don’t have natural teeth, you still need to brush your gums, palate, and tongue with a soft-bristled brush. This will stimulate blood circulation in your mouth.

Your mouth will naturally change as you age. This can cause your dentures to become loose, chafe against your gum or make chewing difficult. If this happens, call us at (562) 869-0928 for a checkup. Never try to adjust the dentures yourself forcefully; it may break them.
