Thanks to modern dental technology, however, replacing your missing teeth is now easier than ever. At Amir Sanjabi, DDS, we can now restore the aesthetics and functions of your smile with state-of-the-art dental implants.

How Do Dental Implants Work

Dental implants are typically made of titanium, which is a hypoallergenic material. These implants are shaped like a screw and can be implanted into your jawbone in place of a missing tooth root.
At Amir Sanjabi, DDS, Amir Sanjabi, DDS will take a computed tomography and x-rays of your mouth to diagnose the health of your teeth and determine whether you are a good candidate of dental implant surgery.
We will then numb the area with a local anesthesia as well as a sedation option to ensure you are relaxed and comfortable during the procedure. We will make a small opening into the jawbone and introduce the implant into it so that it can fit into the jawbone. The device is then allowed to fuse with the bones of the jaw. This process is known as osseointegration and it can take anywhere between 4 months to 12 months to complete.
Once osseointegration has been achieved, your jawbone will be ready to become a stable foundation for a dental crown. We will schedule another appointment with you, numb the area again, and make a small incision to expose the top of the implant.
We will then attach an abutment or a connecting rod to the implant on which the dental crown can be attached.
A lot of people think dental implant surgery is painful; however, the improved anesthesia and advanced technology used during the surgery ensures you stay pain-free and anxiety-free during the procedure.
You may experience some swelling and discomfort once the anesthesia wears off, but this is quite mild and can easily be managed by over-the-counter prescription medication.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer you a wide range of advantages over other dental restoration devices:
•  Natural-Looking and Feeling: Dental implants are the most natural-looking and feeling restoration option. Unlike dentures that do not appear very real, dental implants look just like your natural teeth.
•  More Comfortable: Dental implants offer you the same comfort as natural teeth. In comparison, people who wear dentures often complain of the devices slipping and sliding out of their mouths. They can also cause sores and feel bulky in the mouth. People who have dental bridges also complain of strain on their abutment teeth. With dental implants, you do not have such concerns.
•  Better Chewing and Speaking Ability: Dentures do not allow you to chew or speak as effectively as natural teeth. With dentures, you may not be able to eat tough or hard food and you may speak with a lisp. However, dental implants function almost exactly like your real teeth and hence you do not have to make any effort when speaking or eating your favorite food.
•  Preservation of Alveolar Bone: The alveolar bone consists of sockets which hold your teeth. When your teeth are lost and your jawbone does not get the proper stimulation to strengthen itself, the alveolar ridge disintegrates. This results in low jawbone density as well as your face losing its structure. Dental implants, on the other hand, can replace the missing tooth root in the socket and hence prevent bone necrosis.
•  More Convenience: Dentures need to be removed every time you need to clean them or when you go to sleep. They also need to be handled with care as they can easily become damaged. No such hassle is required with dental implants, which are designed to be fixed and permanent.
•  Low Maintenance: Dentures need to be taken out of your mouth and brushed carefully each night. They should not be washed with hot water and they need to be soaked in a soaking solution or water overnight so that they do not lose their shape. Additionally, in a few years, your dentures will need to be rebased, repaired, or replaced as the structure of your mouth changes. No such maintenance is required with dental implants.
•  Increased Convenience: Dentures have to be removed every time from your mouth when you practice oral hygiene or go to sleep. Additionally, they need to be handled very carefully or they can become damaged. You also need to soak them in water overnight and clean them separately from your mouth, which can be inconvenient. However, dental implants need to be maintained just like your real teeth.
•  Durability: Dental implants are intended to be permanent and with proper care, they can last several decades, if not your whole life.
•  High Success Rate: Dental implant has a very high success rate up to 98 percent, which makes them an ideal tooth restoration option.
