Porcelain Crowns
Downey, CA

Rendering of jaw with dental crownYour smile is your best asset and must be protected at all costs as it has multiple health benefits. Smiling is a great mood booster not just for you but for those around you as well, especially when you smile from the heart and with full confidence. However, damaged or missing teeth can take away the shine from your smile and affect one’s self-confidence.
At Amir Sanjabi, DDS, we offer specialized restorative dental treatments, including dental crowns and dental implants, dentures, and more. Out of all, many patients prefer porcelain dental crowns for their near translucent, natural teeth-like look.

Pros of Porcelain Crowns

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that dentists place over a damaged tooth to cover it. The crown restores the tooth’s shape, functionality, and strength and protects it from further damage. Porcelain is a ceramic material obtained after heating ceramic to really high temperatures. Porcelain crowns offer a number of benefits besides their natural tooth-like look.
•  Aesthetically appealing – We’ve already mentioned that porcelain mimics the look and feel of natural teeth, restoring the visual appeal of one’s smile.
•  Safe for all – some alternative crown materials include metals such as gold and silver, while other options include porcelain fused to metals and are un-ideal for people with metal sensitivities and allergies. Full -porcelain crowns are metal-free and completely safe for everyone.
•  Gentle on the existing structure – Patients that have limited space in their mouth may find porcelain crowns fit better and are a lot more comfortable than other alternatives. They can be customized to fit within tight spaces without damaging the adjacent teeth.
•  Fix alignment – if your teeth are out of alignment with one deeper than the other, a dental crown can help fix that, eliminating whatever pockets the uneven teeth form. These pockets often become the breeding ground for plaque and bacteria, as they are harder to clean.

Procedure for Porcelain Crowns

Most restorative dentistry procedures require multiple sittings, and dental crowns are no different.
•  the first step is to prepare the tooth for the procedure. The dentist will clean the tooth and taper it a little to fit the crown.
•  They will then take an impression of the tooth and send the mold to the laboratory to get the crown ready.
•  In general, the crown preparation takes about a week or two, and until then, the patient is sent home with a temporary crown.

•  The patient comes in for the fitting. The dentist will use etching acid to roughen up the tooth surface to allow it to hold on to the crown.
•  Lastly, the dentist will finish the fitting process by setting the crown over the tooth with dental cement.

During the initial healing period, you will have to take care when chewing or biting into the food. Excessive pressure on the crown can cause it to chip or break, and you will have to go through the process all over again.
Caring for dental crowns is easy. They look just like your natural teeth and have the same care and maintenance requirements. Make sure you brush twice daily and floss regularly to maintain oral hygiene. During your bi-annual visits to Amir Sanjabi, DDS, your dentist will ensure your crown is in place or touch up the fitting if necessary.
