Laser Gum Depigmentation or Gum Bleaching

While dark gums are not inherently unhealthy, treatments do exist to lighten them for patients who may find their current look unattractive. Dark gums are caused by hyper-pigmentation, which is what happens when melanin darkens a specific area of your skin. Melanin pigmentation is widely influenced by genetics, being most common in people of Asian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, or African descent. Other causes of depigmentation include:

•  Smoking. Studies show that smokers are more at risk for this.
•  Specific medications like minocycline (a periodontal infection treatment).
•  Salicylic acid.
•  Metal-based crowns or restorations.
•  Some systemic diseases.
•  Poor dental hygiene leading to buildup of bacteria that cause gum disease.

Known by several names, including gum depigmentation and dark gum treatment, among others, gum bleaching is an aesthetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of one’s smile. We use a laser to remove dark pigmentation in the gums and thereby lighten their color. This approach avoids the stress of needles and allows for a safer, overall painless treatment.

Depigmentation can be finished in one visit, ensuring that you leave satisfied with pinker gums. Patients with unhealthy gums who practice poor oral habits, however, may not qualify. This must be addressed in an interview and pre-examination before treatment can begin. Costs vary, as the procedure will differ from case to case based on the areas & depth of discoloration as well as how extensive laser removal will be. Patients with sensitive gums may feel mild discomfort for a short period after treatment. Fortunately, you will be able to speak, eat, and drink normally immediately afterward. Once completed, depigmentation can last anywhere between 20 years to a lifetime, depending on how well you care for your gums.

Benefits of Laser Dentistry

•  The laser makes treatments more effective and comfortable.

•  Patients are less likely to need sutures.
•  Anesthesia isn’t commonly required (depending on the procedure).
•  The laser sterilizes your gums, decreasing risk of infection.
•  Saving teeth and gum tissue.
•  Effective bone regeneration.
•  Less gum damage means shorter healing time, allowing patients to return to their everyday tasks and routines faster.
•  Blood loss is decreased compared to standard surgical treatments.

Laser Dentistry Recovery

You will usually experience a smoother recovery process than you would in a procedure involving the use of a scalpel, without expecting to deal with the site of your surgery or wound bleeding at home. Likewise, pain and discomfort shouldn’t be an issue due to minor post-op irritation. You will still be given at-home instructions, which are important to follow, but your downtime won’t be long.
