What Options Do You Have for a Cracked Dental Veneer?

What Options Do You Have for a Cracked Dental Veneer? If your dental veneer cracks, it is best to have the veneer replaced as soon as possible. In this case, replacing the veneer is really the only option.

Why a Veneer May Crack

While a veneer is a durable restoration and can last a long time, it can, like a natural tooth, may crack or chip. If this happens to you, you need to have the veneer replaced as soon as possible. A veneer can crack if you bite down too hard, grind or clench your teeth, or have an accident that affects your mouth and teeth. It may also crack if you eat hard food or candy. While we can make adjustments to small flaws, we cannot do the same thing when a veneer becomes chipped or cracked. Your best option, as noted, is to have the veneer replaced. The first thing you should do, if your veneer breaks, is to gather the broken pieces that have fallen out of your mouth. If the veneer is still affixed to your tooth, carefully and gently remove it, and wrap it in a soft cloth or tissue. Store it in a durable container, such as a small plastic Tupperware container, and take it to your dental appointment. If your veneer has cracked, we will need to make an impression and model a new veneer to make in the lab.

What Happens If My Veneer Simply Comes Off?

If your veneer comes off but is not cracked, this type of event is known as debonding. In this case, we usually will reattach the veneer instead of making a new one. To ensure you do not have any problems with cracking or debonding, you need to see us every six months for a checkup and professional cleaning. By taking this measure, we can check the stability of the veneer as well as look for any signs of decay beneath the restoration.
