How To Take Care of Your Oral Health If You Have CancerAn estimated one-third of all cancer patients develop dental or oral complication, reports the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Having cancer is extremely challenging and you do not want oral health complications to exacerbate your worries. Affect of Cancer on Your Oral Health Care

Cancer and the aggressive treatments used to fight the disease can wreak havoc on your immune system. If you do not have a healthy mouth when you start chemotherapy and radiation treatment, you may get an oral infection. A severe infection can delay your cancer treatment, which is not ideal for your continued health.

In addition, cancer treatment can also damage certain organs like salivary gland, which can result in dry mouth and other complications. Some side effects of cancer and its treatment are:

•  Gum disease
•  Tooth decay
•  Sores and canker in the mouth
•  Thick saliva
•  Reduced production of saliva
•  Changed taste
•  Bad breath
•  Difficulty chewing and biting
•  Jawbone disease
•  Soft tissue inflammation
•  Other infections

Many of these side effects start with your cancer treatment and they may not be permanent.

Safeguarding Your Oral Health During Cancer Treatment

Here are some ways to ensure oral health during cancer treatment:

•  Use a mild toothpaste and soft-bristled brush to clean your teeth twice a day.
•  Rinse your mouth with an antibacterial alcohol-free mouthwash after every meal to reduce plaque.
•  If your mouth feels after a treatment session, use ice to reduce the swelling.
•  Flossing can reduce plaque buildup between teeth.
•  Drink lots of water throughout the day. Do not consume sugary drinks or alcohol.
•  Eat high-protein food and avoid spices.
