Sealants are thin coatings painted onto teeth to protect them from decay and cavities. It is common practice for children to get sealants as soon as their teeth come in. Sealants are best applied on first molars at around the age of six and second molars at around the age of 12. In this way, sealants protect children's teeth through the cavity-prone years of 6 to 14.
How Can Adults Benefit from Sealants
Whilst sealants are applied to children's teeth as a matter of routine, adults can also benefit from sealants. Over time, teeth can develop deep grooves and pits. Toothbrushes cannot reach all the way into these depressions and grooves to extract all the food and plaque. The application of sealants to these worn teeth can dramatically reduce decay and the onset of cavities. It is usually the molars and premolars (teeth right in front of the molars) that show signs of wear and tear, because they are used to grind the food, but this can vary from one person to another. It is important to have sealants applied before the onset of any decay and especially before the tooth needs any fillings. If you are experiencing pain from sensitivity, it is worth consulting us to see whether the application of sealants could help.
More Information on Sealants
Sealants are inexpensive and easily and quickly applied. They last for about four years before they need replacement although they become less effective as time goes on. Sealants are either colorless or slightly tinted to match your natural tooth color therefore, they are not easily seen.
Next time you visit us, be sure to ask about sealants and whether they could be applied to your teeth to keep them looking perfect for longer. We would love to help!
