How to Tell if Your Tooth Is Getting a CavityNo one wants to hear that they have a cavity, but almost everyone gets them. Even if you're incredibly diligent with your brushing and flossing, it could happen.

There are so many little spaces in the mouth where bacteria can hide that it can be very difficult to always clean every space. Do you believe you're getting a cavity? Here are a few signs that you are.

Heat or Cold Sensitivity

If you suddenly feel pain when drinking something hot or cold, it can indicate that you have a cavity, especially if you only feel pain when the liquid hits a certain spot in your mouth. Liquids are more likely to cause pain than food but eating hot or cold food can also trigger pain.

Pain When Eating

Over cavities may cause pain when you eat anything. Chewing or biting into the food results in almost immediate sparks of pain. This could come on very quickly if the cavity has just grown large enough to leave the nerves exposed.

Visual Signs
If you look at a tooth and notice that it has a dark spot on it, that's a good indication that the enamel has been damaged. If you see any black areas where it's obvious that enamel is missing, well, you're seeing a cavity. There's no question then on whether or not you have one!

You Come in for a Cleaning

When you visit us for a regular cleaning, one of the things we will do is carefully examine your mouth for any signs of cavities. Often, cavities don't have any symptoms when they're just forming, so you may not realize what's happening. If we note any cavities, we will carefully clean the area and talk to you about your options.
